How to Get Rid of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are faint scars, usually on the thigh, stomach, or butt area, that are often found on many women of all ages. Men can also gain stretch marks. Stretch marks are caused by rapid growth or weight loss in your body. (Thus, your skin is “stretching” to cover your new body shape and creates these marks).

They can be caused by pregnancy or puberty, and also by body building and gaining large muscles, though the latter is more rare.

Stretch marks begin as a purplish, darker color in appearance, and are indented in the skin. However, over time, the stretch marks fade away, getting much lighter in color to blend in more with your natural skin tone, and becoming more even with your skin, and less indented. Sometimes, these stretch marks can fade away and disappear completely.

Many people are annoyed by their stretch marks and don’t want to have them, especially in the Summer months, and bikini season. There are many things you can do to alleviate the appearance of your stretch marks. Here is a step by step process.

1. Dry Skin Brushing

Many dermatologists and skin specialists recommend starting off your morning by practicing dry skin brushing. Using a natural bristle exfoliator, gently stroke your dry skin with the brush, towards your heart. Start with the legs, moving up to the thighs, buttocks, and stomach. Amazon Image Dry brushing exfoliates your skin, allowing the dead skin cells that lie on your top layer to flake off, and let the young new cells come through. This helps to reduce stretch marks by promoting the youthful collagen in your skin, removing the scarred skin and replenishing with new. It is affordable and effective to use a dry brush. I use the one by Yerba Prima.

2. Creams

After dry brushing your skin, take a shower. When finished, apply cream. There are many creams on the marketplace that you can invest in. However, it is unknown whether many of these creams claiming to make your marks disappear actually work. Many people believe creams can work wonders, while others believe that creams don’t help at all. Every body is different and will react differently to various creams. Alpha Hydroxy Acid is a popular ingredient in many of these creams, that exfoliates the skin to remove dead cells and allows new, non scarred cells to form in their place. They are all made with very different ingredients. One good one to try: Mederma Stretch Marks TherapyAmazon Image

3. Makeup

Purchasing makeup that will counteract the appearance of your stretch marks is a great, non invasive way to alleviate their appearance. Applying concealer or foundation to the affected area will make your skin tone look more even, and the lines will blend in with the rest of your body. Dry off after your shower and apply your makeup to your stretch marks, just like you would if you were applying your regular makeup to your face to get ready for the day. While dry skin brushing and exfoliating, creams, and makeup are great, every day ways to reduce stretch marks, there are also other measures you can take.

4. Skin Procedures

Several skin procedures can greatly help improve the appearance of your stretch marks. Microdermabrasion procedures gently work to remove the dead skin cells on the top layer of your skin. This causes the skin to be “filed down” over time, reducing the stretch marks much more quickly. You can also undergo laser procedures. Laser procedures work in a similar way, as they use light and heat to get rid of or reduce your stretch marks over several sessions. 5. Surgical Measures

Several surgeries can be carried out to remove stretch marks as well. The tummy tuck is not only a popular surgical procedure for reducing tummy fat, but it also can eliminate stretch marks in the lower stomach region.

Most importantly, know that most stretch marks heal gradually, over time.

6. Wait it Out

Most people find that just by waiting, their stretch marks fade over time, from the original dark purple scars to lighter shades that closer match their real skin tone. Some people even find that if they wait long enough, their stretch marks completely disappear.

As you can see, many different methods can work to eliminate or reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Best of luck with trying these methods, and remember, don’t get discouraged if something doesn’t work for you. It has been stated that 80% of all people have some type of stretch marks, somewhere on their body. It’s normal and nothing to be ashamed of.
